Comerica Park is located in downtown Detroit, Michigan and is home to the Detroit Tigers. It was built as a replacement for Tiger Stadium and is located next door to Ford Field which is home to the Detroit Lions. Comerica Park has been featured in the movie Driven as well as in several rap videos!
A bit of history.
Groundbreaking for Comerica was held on October 29, 1997 and opened in 2000. The first game was on April 11, 2000 and had 39,168 people attending on the snowy cold afternoon. The grounds crew had to clear snow off the field from the night before. The Tigers defeated the Mariners 5-2.
Comerica Park is part of the downtown revitalization plan for Detroit which included the construction of Ford Field. In December of 1998, Comerica Bank agreed to pay $66 million over 30 years for the naming rights of the Park.
After the ballpark opened players and fans complained that the expansive outfield dimensions made it a difficult park to hit home runs in so prior to the 2003 MLB season the club moved the left field wall closer to home plate making the distance from left center field 370 feet from 395 feet.
The park includes "Monument Park" in the center field stands with statues of former Tigers like Ty Cobb, Hank Greenberg, Al Kaline, and Willie Horton. The first MLB All-Star Game since 1971 was hosted at Comerica Park in 2005 with the Home Run Derby the day before. Bobby Abreu slammed 24 home runs in the first round breaking the previous record of 15! In the All-Star game the American League won 7-5 with Miguel Tejada winning the game's MVP. On October 21, 2006 Comerica hosted the first World Series game in the history of the ballpark-it was game one of the 2006 World Series.
In addition to being the home of the Detroit Tigers baseball team, Comerica Park has also been host to major concerts like Eminem, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, and Bon Jovi. The first group to play at Comerica Park was the Dave Matthews Band in the summer of 2000.
