The Blue Man Group creative organization is centered on a trio of mute performers called the Blue Men that present themselves in blue grease paint, latex bald caps, and black clothing. The Blue Man Group incorporates rock music, odd props, audience participation, lighting, and paper into their acts. The front row of the audience are provided with ponchos in order to protect them from various foods, substances, paints and so on which get thrown, ejected, or sprayed from the stage. The shows are family oriented, fun, and energetic.

In 1999, the group released Audio; their first audio recording. This recording included some of the music from their stage productions. In 2002 they took part in Moby’s Area2 tour including more of a rock performance than in the theatrical shows. The songs that were developed during the Area2 tour were on the 2003 album, The Complex.

The Complex included vocalists and guests like Tracy Bonham, Dave Matthews, Gavin Rossdale, and Venus Hum’s singer Annette Strean. This album resulted in a 2003 tour and was the first headlined by the Blue Man Group. This tour was chronicled in a 2004 DVD release.

Their second tour How to be a Megastar Tour 2.0 began in September of 2006. They added some new material to their original Complex Rock Tour and had Tracy Bonham as the opening act and vocalist. Mike Relm is the opening act for the second leg of the tour.
