Dallas Stars
The Dallas Stars are based in Dallas, Texas and prior to the 1993 season the team was known as the Minnesota North Stars. The Minnesota North Stars were founded in 1967 as an expansion team and played their games adjacent to Metropolitan Stadium at the Metropolitan Sports Center in Bloomington, Minnesota. The North Stars were successful on the ice and at the gate; however financial problems arose after several disappointing seasons in the mid 1970's. In 1978, they North Stars were purchased by the owners of the Cleveland Barons, the Gund brothers, and the NHL allowed the two franchises to merge. The merged team was called the Minnesota North Stars. The North Stars were revived and made the Stanley Cup Finals in 1981, but lost in five games to the New York Islanders. By the early 1990's, low attendance and the inability to secure a downtown venue led the owners to request a move, but the move was denied by the NHL, however an expansion franchise was awarded, the San Jose Sharks, for 1991-92 to the Gund brothers in what was an end to the Barons/North Stars merger. The season prior to all of this was the season that Minnesota lost to the Penguins in the Stanley Cup Finals.

The new owner, Norm Green, was granted permission to move the team to Reunion Arena, in Dallas, Texas where the team was renamed the Stars. In the 1994 playoffs the Stars lost to the Canucks and in 1999 the Stars won their first Stanley Cup defeating the Buffalo Sabres. Dallas returned to the Cup in 2000, but lost to the New Jersey Devils. In 2001-02 the Stars moved to their new arena, the American Airlines Center. On top of their 1999 Stanley Cup, they have won two President's Trophies as the team with the best overall regular season record, and have seven division titles and two Western Conference titles in the past nine or so seasons.

In 2006 the Stars lost in the first round of the playoffs which led to some rebuilding, restructuring, and redeveloping.

Dave Tippett was hired as the 19th head coach in the Stars team history in May of 2002 and has since led the Stars to a 140-71-33 record, ranking as the best record among all active NHL coaches. After leading the Stars to two Pacific Division titles in 2002-03 and 2005-06, and three consecutive playoff appearances, his contract has been extended through the end of the 2007-08 NHL season.
