PETCO Park is a stadium located in downtown San Diego, California. It opened in 2004 replacing Qualcomm Stadium as the home of the San Diego Padres. Beginning in 2007, the stadium will host the USA Sevens international rugby union sevens event every year. The stadium is named after the animal and pet supplier, PETCO which is based in San Diego. The stadium is located across Harbor Drive from the San Diego Convention Center.

Most outdoor ballparks have the batter facing in the northeasterly direction, but in PETCO Park the batter faces north and the fans in the grandstands are treated to a view of the San Diego Bay and the San Diego skyline beyond the left field seats and a view of Balboa Park which contains the San Diego Zoo beyond center field. The San Diego Union-Tribune honored the park in 2006 with an Orchid award for its design.

The Western Metal Supply Company Building, a 100 year old structure, that had been scheduled for demolition to make way for PETCO Park was saved and incorporated into the design of the new ballpark. It was renovated and is now used for the team store, private suites, a restaurant and rooftop seating. The corner of the building is the left field foul pole!

PETCO Park has a park at the park which is a grassy berm sloping above the outfield fence which is open during the game to fans to sit and watch the game for a small price. When there isn't a game going on then the park at the park is a free local park for area residents.

On March 18 and March 20 of 2006 the ballpark hosted the Semifinals and the Finals of the first World Baseball Classic. The first concert held at PETCO Park was on November 11, 2005, The Rolling Stones.

Parking
More than 27,000 parking spaces are located near the ballpark in the downtown area. Of those spaces, 11,000 have been designated specifically for PETCO Park fans. Premium parking is also available directly adjacent to PETCO Park. Each parking zone has been designated a different color for easy referencing on the downtown access and parking map. Fans should choose a parking location based upon the direction they'll be heading after the game whether it is to the north, east or south.

Directions
For fans traveling by car, four major thoroughfares feed into and out of downtown in all directions: Pacific Highway, Interstate 5, State Route 163 and State Route 94/Martin Luther King Freeway. In addition, eight freeway on-and off-ramps service the area immediately around the ballpark.
