Lollapalooza is an American music festival that features alternative rock, hip hop, and punk rock bands. It also features dance and comedy performances, and craft booths. Lollapalooza was organized in 1991 by Perry Farrell, singer for the band Jane’s Addiction. This festival ran annually through 1997 and was revived in 2003. It received poor ticket sales in 2004 and forced it to be canceled, but was revived in 2005 by an Austin, TX Capital Sports Entertainment business into its current weekend destination festival at Grant Park in Chicago.
Lollapalooza is defined as something outstanding or unusual. Perry Farrell had this idea of the Lollapalooza festival in 1990 to give Jane’s Addiction a farewell tour. Lollapalooza is a touring show, a modern day Chautauqua, travelling across the U.S. and Canada. The 1991 lineup was eclectic with Ice-T and Nine Inch Nails. A key to Lollapalooza is including non-musical features with performers like the Jim Rose Circus Side Show or an alternative freak show. The addition of tents with art pieces, virtual reality games, and information tables are also key to the success of the festival.
After the 1991 festival a second stage was added and in 1996 a third stage for upcoming bands and local groups was created. The explosion of grunge music helped move Lollapalooza forward with mosh pits and crowd surfing. These years brought the addition of open microphone readings and oratory, television smashing pits, jungle gyms and group musical pieces as well as tattooing and piercing parlors. The year 1994 was the height of grunge, yet a year of tragedy for Lollapalooza. Nirvana the band that had kicked off grunge’s breakthrough was scheduled to headline, however Kurt Cobain declined the offer and died shortly thereafter. The Smashing Pumpkins ended up headlining instead. Courtney Love, Kurt Cobain’s widow, appeared at many shows speaking to the crowds about the loss. This is when there were accidents and unruly fans at the shows and it was the beginning of Lollapalooza losing its focus. By 1997 the festival had lost its spark and in 1998 it failed to find a headliner willing to do the show, which paid its toll.
It wasn’t until 2003 that Farrell reunited Jane’s Addiction and scheduled a new tour. The festival schedule included venues in 30 cities through July and August. This festival tour was only mediocre and in 2004 the tour was scheduled with a tour stop consisting of a two day festival and was canceled in June due to poor sales.
Farrell ended up partnering with Capital Sports & Entertainment and revived the festival in 2005 making it a two day destination festival at Grant Park in Chicago. This included a better variety of performers than the touring festival. The festival was also held in Chicago in 2006 and in October of 2006 the Chicago Park District and Capital Sports & Entertainment agreed to a five year contract keeping Lollapalooza at Grant Park in Chicago through 2011.
The 2007 Lollapalooza festival will take place at Grant Park in Chicago on August 3-5.
