Dodger Stadium is a baseball stadium in Los Angeles, California at Chávez Ravine. It is adjacent to downtown Los Angeles and was a privately financed deal. The stadium is on the hillside overlooking downtown Los Angeles. You can see views of the city to the south, the green tree lined hills of Elysian Park to the north and east and the San Gabriel Mountains beyond the outfield pavilions. It is one of the most beautiful and well maintained stadiums in all of baseball.
The stadium has a seating capacity of 56,000 and was designed to be capable of an expansion to 85,000 seats. It was designed to be earthquake resistant and has stood the test of many earthquakes. The stadium is privately owned and has maintained a level of pride that is typically missing from public facilities. A few renovations were made in 2004 and in 2006; Dodger owner Frank McCourt announced his multi-year plan for the ongoing improvements. This includes replacing every seat within the primary seating bowl and going back to the original color palette, repairing and conducting maintenance on the concrete structure within the seating bowl area, and installing a modern box seating along the baselines.
Dodger's Stadium is said to be a "pitchers' park". Pitchers like Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Don Sutton, Fernando Valenzuela, and Orel Hershiser became superstars after coming to LA. Nine no-hitters have been thrown in the stadium, including two perfect games.
The 2006 season was the Dodger franchise's 45th season at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers have only been rained out once prior to 1976 and that was against the St. Louis Cardinals on April 21, 1967. That rainout ended a streak of 737 consecutive games without a postponement! The second rainout was on April 12, 1976 which ended a streak of 724 games.
Dodger Stadium has been home to many greats over the years including Don Drysdale, Sandy Koufax, Maury Wills, Tommy Davis, Steve Garvey, Fernando Valenzuela, Kirk Gibson, Orel Hershiser, and Mike Piazza. The stadium has also been privy to many notable events like Pope John Paul II celebrating his famous Mass at Dodge Stadium on September 16, 1987, many of the world's top rock bands have performed at Dodger Stadium like The Cure, KISS, The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, and many more.
Dodger Stadium was named best in baseball by Sports Illustrated in 2003 in a poll of Major League players. At the gates an average of more than 2.79 million fans have watched Dodger games at the stadium per season over the past 45 years.
Dodger Stadium has hosted eight World Series and the Dodgers have won four World Championships (1963, 1965, 1981, & 1988), eight NL pennants (1963, 1965, 1966, 1974, 1977, 1978, 1981, 1988), nine NL Western division crowns (1974, 1977, 1978, 1981, 1983, 1985, 1988, 1995, 2004) and two NL Wild Card berths (1996 & 2006).
