University of Phoenix Stadium Information

University of Phoenix Stadium
One Cardinals Drive • Glendale, AZ 85305

University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona is home to the Arizona Cardinals of the NFL. The new stadium is located across the street from Glendale Arena. The 63,500 seat stadium can expand to 72,800. It opened on August 12, 2006 when the Cardinals hosted the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Cardinals won 21-13 in the preseason game. The first regular season game will be September 10, 2006 against the San Francisco 49ers. This will be the first time the Cardinals will play the opening weekend of the NFL season at home since arriving in Arizona in 1988.

The new stadium will also be home to the annual Fiesta Bowl and once every four years to the BCS National Championship Game. In 2008, it will host Super Bowl XLII. It is also scheduled to be the site for the West Regional Finals of the 2009 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament.

This new facility features a retractable roof that is 206 feet above grade and uses more than 100,000 square feet of Teflon coated translucent fabric that allows light to pass through. The roof moves up and down on an incline and is driven by a cable drum drive system. In order to open the roof the cable is unwound and to close it the cable is recoiled. It takes 15 minutes to open and close it.

It also features the first fully retractable natural grass playing surface that was built in the U.S. The retractable playing field is on a 19 million pound tray that sits on 13 rails. The stadium also features oversized 30 foot tall parking lot identifiers outside of each parking lot. The plaza surrounding the stadium is named the Pat Tillman Freedom Plaza in memory of the former Cardinals defensive back who was killed in action while serving with the U.S. Army in Afghanistan.

The stadium has 88 suites and now has a built-in tailgating lawn, called Sportsman's Park, which is directly outside the stadium.
