Providence Friars
The 2007-08 season could be a make-or-break one for Friar Head Coach Tim Welsh. During his tenure, Providence has always seemed like an up-and-coming team and some feel it's time for them to take the next step as a legitimate threat in March. If the Friars can avoid some of the potholes that have befallen them in recent seasons (namely, injuries), they have a talented-enough roster to make some noise in the Big East and beyond.
The Friars are particularly well-stocked at the guard positions and feature 5 players that will see the floor as the season progresses. Leading the way will be Sharaud Curry and Weyinmu Efejuku, although, Curry will miss the early part of the season while he continues to recover from a broken foot. Backing these two up will be Dwain Williams and Jeff Xavier, both good-shooting guards who should be able to minimize the loss of Curry's brief absence. However, if either player doesn't succeed running the point, expect freshman Marshon Brooks to get his chance.
The Friar frontcourt will be counted on a great deal as well. Fortunately for Coach Welsh, he has talent there as well; most notably, in the form of Charles Burch and Geoff McDermott. Expect the center position to be manned by Randall Hanke and backed up by Ray Hall. As you can see, the Friars do have talent and depth but Coach Welsh is at a point in career where wins are going to matter. If they can stay healthy, they will have enough to compete with anyone in the Big East and beyond.
