LeGarrette Blount = Human Helicopter

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or follow us on Facebook. Thanks for visiting!

I’ll say this about LeGarrette Blount, since he’s appeared on my horizon on that fateful night in Boise, Idaho, there’s never a dull moment. Whether he’s knocking opposing players on their asses or salvaging a professional career that looked very much in doubt at one point, the odyssey of LeGarrette Blount is not a boring one. Now there’s another entry into the captivating life of Blount: he’s also a human helicopter.

Don’t believe me? Ask Charles Godfrey of the Carolina Panthers:

I’m afraid to speculate what’s next for Blount, because I’m sure it would fall short. In other news, just how good are the Tampa Buccaneers?

Kellen Winslow To the Buccaneers

Kellen Winslow

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers got a new offensive solider today when they traded for Cleveland Browns tight end, Kellen Winslow, Jr. As compensation, the Browns receive some undisclosed draft picks, something Eric Mangini surely covets. Additional picks will certainly help him as he builds the team in his image — although, was trading a franchise-level tight end the way to go? As a reward for his time in Cleveland, Winslow, Jr. will now be catching passes from an inexperienced Luke McCown.

I’m left wondering how that little detail hit the Solider from the U? Is McCown somehow more accomplished than Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson?

Who Got The Better Name Change?

Ocho Stylez

By now, we’ve all heard about Tampa Bay Buccaneer Greg White’s name change to Stylez G. White, which might be one of the best stories of the year. White’s name change was so dramatic, so cool, it pretty much dwarfed Chad Ocho Cinco’s failed attempt. At least White doesn’t have to worry about pesky jersey alterations. To many, White’s new name is much more impressive than Johnson’s broken Spanish attempt.

But the subject deserves a closer look after the jump: >>

Purple Jesus Needs Jeff Garcia

Jeff Garcia

Furthering the thought presented by Mike Florio and MVN, in light of the Tarvaris Jackson benching news, the Minnesota Vikings would be absolutely foolish if they weren’t on the phone right this second with Jon Gruden, offering whatever they could — save PJ — for the rights to get Jeff Garcia up north.

Jackson was benched after his poor play against Indianapolis on Sunday, as well as some other games before that, which ended on him throwing an interception.

If, like some suggested, Brad Childress was being blinded by (alliteration rules) his desire to see his work with Jackson pay off, the decision to start Gus Frerotte should have pulled that wool away. Now that he can obviously see again, wouldn’t it be wise to go after an even better option before the season slips further away?

NFL Preview – A Quick Look at the NFC South

New Orleans Saints

Jeremy Shockey

Outlook
After taking the NFL by storm and making the NFC Conference finals two seasons ago, the Saints had a little bit of a fall back to earth in 2007, finishing 7-9. Injuries and a lack of defense played a big part in the disappointing end but because of a good draft and guarded optimism concerning injured players — not to mention the trade for ex-Giant Jeremy Shockey — 2008 looks like a bounce-back year for the Saints.

The keys are this: a return to form for Reggie Bush, something that should be aided by the return of Deuce McAllister who represents another key for the Saints; improvement on defense, a situation they tried to address in the Draft when they selected Sedrick Ellis; continued greatness from Drew Brees; and avoidance of the omnipresent injury bug.

The addition of Shockey, Ellis and the return of McAllister improves the outlook for the Saints a great deal. McAllister’s presence makes Reggie Bush a weapon again, instead of a 3.7-yard-a-game back who fumbled seven times. If Sean Payton utilizes Shockey correctly — and signs are he will — New Orleans should once again be an offensive juggernaut and could potentially hide a lot of defensive shortcomings.

10-6 and the NFC South championship.

Hottest Saints Cheerleader
The sad thing about NFL websites are for every San Diego cheerleader page, there’s one like the Saintsations. If San Diego and Dallas are the Facebook of cheerleader pages, the Saintsations must be Angelfire or GeoCities. To wit, they have no full images of the team members and the design looks very Frontpage-ish, especially when it comes to resizing images. Nevertheless, I did stumble upon Samantha and her nice smile.

Romessica

After dealing with that site, I wish Roger Goodell would implement some kind of web standards for these team sites.

Tampa Brett?

Tampa Brett?

It looks like the above picture is coming closer and closer to becoming fact — that is, Brett Favre joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, although, there are also rumors of the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets getting his services as well. News of the potential trades broke late last night on the 2am Sportscenter as Chris Mortensen was evidently putting in mad amounts of overtime.

The idea of trading Favre, once an unthinkable prospect, came to light after hours and hours of meeting between the embattled quarterback and the Green Bay coaching staff and front office. The consensus? Brett no longer belongs in Green Bay. In fact, in one of the most ironic statements perhaps ever, Favre indicated he did not want to be a distraction to incumbent starter Aaron Rodgers.

Um, excuse me? What the hell would you call these last few weeks, there Brett?

Moving on. If/when Favre suits up for 2008, it will be for another team — although, I wonder what would happen if, say, Rodgers got hurt in practice. Would the front office and Mike McCarthy have a change of heart? Would Brett somehow get over these “emotional wounds” causing the rift?

As for his Tampa Bay projections, it’s pretty obvious Jon Gruden would love to have Brett but what about Jeff Garcia? If he isn’t part of the trade package to bring Favre in, would he just sit idly by and give up his starting position? Not according to him, he wouldn’t.

Furthermore, if Garcia was part of the trade package, he’d obviously expect to compete with Rodgers for the Packers starting job. Would the Green Bay coaching staff allow that to happen or are they hellbent on keeping Rodgers under center until he A. proves himself or B. fails? Again, it’s doubtful Garcia would quietly accept back-up duties. It’s obvious he wants to be the centerpiece of an offense and as long as he has that ability, why would you fault him for that?

As for Favre, I really doubt this is the way he wanted to end his Green Bay career. Understatement aside, I’m still having a hard time understanding his overwhelming sense of neediness. After being pedestalized for so long, does he really need the reassuring pat on the back from Mike McCarthy and company to feel good about playing quarterback in Green Bay? Apparently so.

More on this as it breaks.
