Think being a great NFL player can get passed down through the generations? With the emergence of Clay Matthews as defensive (and hair) god for the Green Bay Packers, questions now abound on whether the team will pick up his younger brother, Casey, from the draft.

The Matthews boys come from a long line of great players. his dad, Clay Jr., played almost two full decades for the Browns and Falcons. His uncle, Bruce, played for the Oilers, and his grandfather, Clay Sr., played with the 49ers.

All of them did well, so they weren’t a flash in the pan, although I don’t know if they all had the magnificent hair that Clay does. I do know that Casey has the hair, so maybe there will be opportunities for joint hair commercials. Wouldn’t that be special?

Clay was drafted in the Packers first round in 2009, and this year the team could pick up Casey, who has been kicking butt with the University of Oregon. The two brothers are much different players, however. Casey is lighter by 20 pounds and wouldn’t serve in the pass-rusher spot like his brother. Not that the team needs another one. They could let go of a couple veterans in the inside linebacker area, and if they do that Casey might be a pick to make.

Casey says he wouldn’t mind playing in Green Bay, but that he doesn’t “know how people might perceive it. You’re playing in the shadow of your brother. That’s what it would start out as. I would like to prove them wrong.”

Agreed. The kid would be compared continually to Clay throughout the first couple years at least. While that could still happen if he goes to another team, it would be much less so. Besides that, Green Bay is finally getting over comparisons of players in the quarterback position (who shall remain nameless) and they don’t need to start that up again with a new set of players and positions. While Casey would no doubt be a good player to pick up, I think Green Bay should pass on him.

With all the talk of re-seeding and skunky teams in the playoffs, this game proved the right teams rise to the top and play to win. Here are three of the key moments that made this game great.

Packers Veterans Injured

Both the offensive and defensive hearts of the Green Bay Packers team, Donald Driver and Charles Woodson, both suffered injuries that sent them to the sidelines. This could have been a disaster. It could have meant the game was now The Steelers to lose. But I echo what I said in my Super Bowl prediction, the Packers have had key injuries all year and the backups stepped up. It happened again Sunday, and rather than have it be a disaster, it might have given the Packers that much more to play for.

Steelers Commit Three Rare Turnovers

It wasn’t just the fact that The Steelers coughed the ball up, it was the fact that the Packers capitalized each time by turning them into points. This was key because those types of moments with a team like the Steelers are very rare. Had they not made turnovers, the game would have been a lot closer and might even have a different outcome.

Clay Matthews Makes Key Fumble

A lot of hype was made about Clay Matthews and Troy Polamalu coming into the game, but both names weren’t called as frequently as they had been during the regular season. One reason for that was that Matthews was charged with a different play strategy, that of closely shadowing the movements of Ben Roethlisberger. But as the fourth quarter started, Packers linebackers coach told Matthews, “It’s time.” Matthews took that instruction and created a fumble by knocking the ball loose from Rashard Mendenhall. That fumble was recovered by Desmond Bishop, which then ended the game and gave the Packers the win.

I’m all for endorsement deals and making the bucks while you can in the NFL, but as a girl who enjoys football, I think this whole hair craziness has gotten a bit out of hand. The Clay Matthews/Troy Polamalu matchup would be so great… if it wasn’t for the fact that I have to hear about their hair as often as I do their defensive stats.

As a chick, it’s just plain wrong for a guy to have better hair than you. Am I slightly envious that Clay Matthews just got a deal with Suave?

Yes. In fact, more than slightly, because my hair is much better than his. It has body and bounce. His is stringy and straight and were it not for the fact that he whips it around like a lasso seventeen times per game, he wouldn’t have a hair deal. Besides that, unlike Maria Menounos, I have no desire to touch it. I think Matthews is just too darn proud of his hair. He whips it around

Clay Matthews has had a really good year, but it just got a little better. He was named “defensive player of the year” by the Sporting News. Matthews is only in his second year, but he comes from a long line of NFL players. His dad, uncle, and grandfather were all in the NFL. Oh, and I hear he has a younger brother who might make his way into the league in a couple years, too.

Matthews had 13-and-a-half sacks in the regular season. He also had two forced fumbles, and an interception. And what did he do with that interception? He took it back for a touchdown. You betcha. Matthews is pretty much the perfect player, except that he needs to cut his hair. There is something about a big tough guy kicking ass on the field and taking his helmet off to fluff his hair that just seems wrong.

Speaking of hair, Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamulu finished second in voting to Matthews. Take that, Steelers fans!

Pats quarterback Tom Brady was named the offensive player of the year, and Michael Vick got the comeback honor. (I’m sure Tucker Carlson will be thrilled.)
