Some Good Wood

In honor of tonight’s revenge game for New England Patriots running back Danny Woodhead, arguably one of the best feel-good stories of this year’s NFL season, I present to you the 5 Greatest Woodies of All Time. Sorry Ron Jeremy, you or your pals aren’t eligible for this award.
5. Kerry Wood, pitcher
Wood burst on the scene for the Chicago Cubs in 1998. It took him no time at all to start his domination, throwing a 20-strikeout 1-hitter in just his 5th major league start. He went on to have 200+ strikeouts in 4 of his first 5 seasons. Wood might be a little higher on this list, but arm troubles have derailed his career, at least as a starter. He continues to draw interest though having reinvented himself as an effective, yet injury-prone reliever.
4. Clu Heywood, first baseman
Played by 1982 Cy Young winner Pete Vuckovich in the move Major League, Heywood was a big time Indians killer until Ricky Vaughn manned up and blew three straight fast balls by him and the Indians won the pennant. One of my favorite movies of all time (and another post entirely).
3. Charles Woodson, defensive back
In 1997 Woodson became the first defensive Heisman Trophy winner, though he did make some appearances at wide receiver as well. He led Michigan to the national championship which led to me declaring Michigan’s fight song as the greatest ever.
2. Lynette Woodard, basketball star
Woodard became the first ever female Harlem Globetrotter. She was also a Kansas Jayhawk making her my second favorite Jayhawk female athlete. My favorite? Former setter Molly LaMere.
1. David Wooderson, stoner
“That’s what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age.”
What a great movie. Does it get any better than that?
Honorable mention:
- Woodrow Wilson, president
- Jeff Woodson, roommate
- Woody, toy cowboy

What about Woody Wilson shop teacher extrodinare, or Woody theh bartender from Cheers, or my personal favorite former Regent glove owner Rex Wood. I love the Heywood and Wooderson drop ins though!
Thanks for the honorable mention Nate. You really know how to stroke my ego. I have a somewhat of a humorous story that may fit in here. Upon graduating high school in 1998, I attempted to play football at Simpson College, a Division III school. Now you can imagine how cool I thought I was having the same last name as that years Heisman Trophy winner and being a defensive back(free safety). Well, the head coach at the time was some old JoePa type of coach, been there forever and had a ton of wins. We were preseason number one, solely based on them recruiting me. Yeah right. Come time for some tests (40yd, 300yd etc.) and the old boy hears my last name and asks “Can you play like Charles?”. and no shit I turn to the old boy and in front of 100 dudes i didn’t even know and all the other coaches and say “If I could I wouldn’t be here.”, and then killed the 300 yd agility run. I quit 10 days later. they tried making me a cornerback and i wouldn’t have any of it. I was troy polamalu before troy polamalu. You can’t keep a beast in a cage on the corners, especially when that beast was chubby, asthmatic and had a bad knee.
