A few of us out there eschewed conventional wisdom and picked the Houston Rockets to represent the Western Conference in the NBA Championship, myself included. Hell, I even picked them to win it all, but I think that had as much to do with me not wanting to pick Lakers over whoever like everyone else. Whatever. Kenny Smith agrees with me, by the way.

Anyway, the Rockets season began last night with a pedestrian win over the Memphis Grizzlies and tonight, they travel to Dallas to face Dirk Diggler and crew. True story, my buddy has a Nowitzki jersey with “Diggler” on the back. Great stuff. Back to Yao and the Gang — the Mavericks game, while early in the season (game two for Houston), does represent a test for Houston. For one, I’d like to see if Artest can (and does) guard Dirk. It seems like a better match up for the Rockets than using Luis Scola.

Whatever the case, if Yao keeps making shots like this:

It won’t matter who they use to guard Nowitzki. The Dallas/Houston game is the first of a double-header on TNT.
