West Virginia Burns Oklahoma’s Couch
There was some concern going into last night’s Fiesta Bowl that West Virginia—disappointed they aren’t playing in the BCS Championship game because of their surprising loss to Pitt—may not show up and play as hard as they were capable. Well, after shellacking Bob Stoops’ Oklahoma Sooners 48-28, it’s safe to say these worries were unfounded.
Led by a rushing attack that looked like it would run forever, the Mountaineers scored on runs of 57 yards, 30 yards, and 65 yards while racking up an impressive 349 yards rushing. WVU also scored on a 79-yard pass play when Pat White found Tito Gonzales in the middle of the field. White finished with two passing touchdowns and accumulated over 300 passing and running yards.
For Oklahoma and Bob Stoops, the Mountaineer beatdown is the fourth BCS bowl game loss in row.
Of course, with such a convincing win, the WVU faithful had a hard time containing their joy, as evidenced by this Loser with Socks post, giving full support for soon-to-be head coach Bill Stewart, who filled in magnificently for the departed Rich Rodriguez:
Bill Stewart just schooled Bob Stoops. Are people in shock that they don’t realize the magnitude of this man’s ability? OK, his name wasn’t as well known to sports writers a couple of days ago, but the man can coach and a lot more people in the press are taking notice.
I fully support the decision to offer him the job, he has earned it.
Maybe it will take a day or so for the doubters to step back and realize what this man just did and what he is capable of.
EDSBS has the YouTube of what was probably the most memorable play from last night: a 57-yard touchdown scamper from Owen Schmitt, perhaps the heart and soul of this Mountaineer team:
Hopefully, tonight’s Kansas/Virginia Tech match-up is as entertaining as watching West Virginia run up and down the field at will…
