Brandon Marshall, wide receiver of the Miami Dolphins, was violently stabbed in the stomach with a kitchen knife by his wife during a domestic dispute. It’s clear now that Brandon Marshall is expected to make a full recovery. However, it’s even more clear that being stabbed in the stomach by your wife is cause for concern, alarm, even a little bit of sympathy. While details remain quite unclear, one thing is for certain – a man was reportedly in intensive care for a serious stab wound which required surgery.

When the report came over the airwaves, I was greeted with Adam Schefter’s effort, which left me speechless. Having read many articles on the subject that flood the internet when something this high-profile occurs, it was clear he wasn’t the only one who used this opportunity – not to express concern for another human being who had been stabbed in the stomach by a violent wife – but to bury Brandon Marshall before he was dead.

Fortunately for Brandon Marshall, he didn’t die, because my guess is these vultures would likely have continued down the path of denigrating a person who appears to be the victim of a very serious crime. It’s a very serious crime even if Brandon Marshall, in some ultra-creepy defense of his violent wife, chose to first attempt to cover it up and is likely to continue to “stand by” his woman.

Reports like Schefter’s happen every day. When a man is a victim, the masses look to find out what he did to deserve it. Reporters dig deep to find something in their past that might explain why it might have been necessary for a woman to deposit steel blade deep into his belly. Here is my summary of A-Dumb Shefter’s report on the news that Brandon Marshall had been stabbed by his wife:

He opened with an offensive quip about how the NFL Lockout prevents the Miami Dolphins organization from “getting in contact with Brandon Marshall” and added “…but that’s not the case for his wife.”

That’s not quite hysterical, Schefty.

Brandon Marshall is the victim of a stabbing and Adam Schefter continued…

The latest blemish on his resume’

One of the instigators of the fight that led to Darrent Williams shooting death in 2006.

Has a history of disorderly conduct, drunk driving, and alleged domestic violence.

Brandon Marshall has never had a hard time finding the endzone nor trouble.

These are primary reasons the Denver Broncos traded him to Miami for two 2nd-round picks.

The Broncos never fully trusted Marshall.

What trust Miami had in Marshall, who they gave a 5-year, $50-million deal has to be eroding.

That was it. Hate-fest on Brandon Marshall. No concern about his well-being. No condemnation of the perpetrator of the stabbing. Brandon Marshall is getting the hole in his belly surgically closed in the hospital, the hole his wife created with a knife, and this is what ESPN’s Adam Schefter presents as the report on the situation.

This is simply a microcosm of what’s wrong in our society today. Now, I know that Brandon Marshall’s past is littered with various indiscretions. Being a stabbing victim at the hands of his wife, to the best of our knowledge at this point, isn’t one of them. The reality is, if the genders were reversed, Brandon Marshall would still be getting buried. People like Adam Schefter wouldn’t dredge up the sordid past of the wife and trot that out in a report on the situation. Nope. There are countless examples of this in the mainstream media every day.

A woman in New York drives her van into a river and kills three of her children – news reports focus on what kind of monster the ex-husband must have been to “make her” do that. Reports come out about how she was such a wonderful mother who would do anything for her children. Sympathetic comments flood the article. Think I’m joking? Read here: Father Gets Criticized for New York Mother Killing Kids.

This problem is pervasive. It’s offensive. It’s flat-out wrong and people need to start stepping up and voicing their outrage.

Violent females always seem to have an excuse or a defense for their criminal behavior. If there is a man around to blame for her transgressions – the mainstream media will find him. Even the imbalance in sentencing for like-crimes (serious ones) will show a disparity that results in leniency towards female criminals.

I take a chance talking about this issue and using a character like Brandon Marshall for a reason. When the talk about “victim-blaming” rears its ugly head, it’s usually because someone has been looking into the past of a female victim. In our “men as disposable” society – you won’t see any outcry over a male victim having his past dredged up in some thinly veiled attempt to blame him for being just that – a victim of a serious crime.

It’s clear from their hostile relationship that something far more bizarre between them exists than we could hope to truly understand. From Brandon Marshall claiming a fall on something caused the wound, to going back with her, and not being forthright in the investigation makes that much clear. But maybe Schefter could at least take a look at that situation and wonder for a fleeting moment – maybe the past “alleged incidents of domestic violence” were Brandon Marshall covering up for his lunatic wife.

Marshall’s wife, Michi Nogami-Marshall, 26, was arrested Friday by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office on a domestic-violence charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Nogami-Marshall was released from jail on a $7,500 bond Saturday afternoon.

$7,500 BOND FOR STABBING HER HUSBAND! In what world is this appropriate?

Add to the NFL mess comes news that Denver Broncos linebacker, Jason Hunter, is in stable condition after being stabbed by a “female acquaintance.” I wonder what kind of dirt they’ll dig up on this poor bastard so that we can ignore the fact that another violent women has committed a violent crime.Similar Posts:

The NFL has maintained that it will continue to enforce the personal conduct policy during the player lockout. Not that it would need to, because the players have been on their best behavior during negotiations. (NOT.)

Aqib Talib from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is the latest to go on the list of players who have been arrested. The Bucs said that they are “deeply troubled” by the charges but that “Due to current labor circumstances, we will withhold any further comment or action.”

After all, what can they say? Talib is now the sixth player arrested since the lockout began. There is a nice, tidy list at Fox that shows the arrests since the lockout. They include:

Chris Cook (Vikings) – for “brandishing a gun during a verbal altercation with a neighbor.”

Bryan McCann (Cowboys) – who was arrested after a “public intoxication” charge.

Johnny Jolly (Packers) – Yes, I’m biased and actually think the Packers have a great group of guys now. They seem… gentlemanly. But Jolly is the odd man out in that group because he was just busted for “allegedly possessing 600 grams of codeine syrup in his Cadillac Escalade.” He was gone all of last year (suspended) for personal conduct violations.

Then there are the two guys who just had to call attention to themselves by cranking their music super loud:

Jason Peters (Eagles) – arguably the least troublesome of offenders, who merely “violated the city’s loud music policy” in Shreveport. However, he did resist arrest. DOH!

Mario Henderson (Raiders) – apparently loud music is a problem with NFLers. Oh, that and driving around with guns that they don’t have permits for. (Which makes me suggest that if you are going to drive around with a gun in your car for which you do not have a permit, maybe you should call less attention to yourself and keep your music at a dull roar.)

Players have been arguing that the NFL owners are not treating them like equal business partners, but when you see arrests like this it just hurts their case. Business owners do not act like this, because if they do they are quickly put out of business.Similar Posts:

Seems like Michael Vick sparks controversy even when he isn’t doing anything wrong. The latest snit involving Vick centers around his jersey in Warwick High School. The school had proudly displayed Vick’s jersey right up until the dog fighting incident and conviction. The school decided then (2007) to take it down. No use highlighting a football star when he falls from grace, right?

I remember at the time of his conviction, people said he was done. No team would hire him and he’d never be back in the NFL. Of course, those people were wrong. Now, of course, Vick is back, and stronger than ever. He actually seems to have more respect from fans, coaches, and players than he did before, and how wowed people were with his talent before, that’s saying something.

Back to his jersey. Warwick High School students have come out in droves in support of hanging the jersey once again. The school has thus far said no, claiming that it might “become a distraction — perhaps the subject of theft or vandalism.”

Distraction? I don’t see that. Subject of theft or vandalism? Yeah, I can see that. But there are a lot of things in school that are subject to that.

And of course, what’s a campaign to get something done these days without Facebook? One group has set up a page urging others to join in the fight to get the jersey back on the wall, while another group has started a page against the action. (And since Betty White became a host on Saturday Night Live due to a Facebook campaign, I think we all know just how truly important the social networking site is in matters such as this.)

My two cents (because yes, I might as well throw yet another opinion in there) is that the school simply needs to wait a bit. Not long. Even after this season, perhaps. The Eagles have made a lot of coaching changes in the off-season and will undoubtedly come back next year (if we have a next year) strong. Vick is likely to be a big part of that equation and there might be more people in favor of hanging his jersey.

Another reason to wait is simply that it’s been too soon after his conviction. Yes, he paid his dues. But the public isn’t done grieving the things he did. He has every right to play in the NFL. But to honor him in a high school? I can see why some people balk at this right now. Give it time, another year or two, and they’ll change their mind.Similar Posts:

Maybe what is needed among NFL players trying to plead their case is a little “PR 101″ training. Because I was on their side until Adrian Peterson made his major “oops” statement Friday likening the NFL salary negotiations break down to slavery.

Peterson’s rant started because he wanted the team owners to open their books. While I think an employee normally doesn‘t have the right to ask for this, since NFL salary and bonuses are sometimes tied to revenue it’s a valid point.

Peterson said, “. . . If they have nothing to hide, just give us the information. Why not? Obviously, there’s a lot to hide.”

So far so good. But then he kept talking, saying, “It’s modern-day slavery, you know?”

No Mr. Peterson, it most certainly is NOT modern-day slavery.

Peterson continued to show ignorance by saying, “…there are people working at regular jobs who get treated the same way, too. With all the money . . . the owners are trying to get a different percentage, and bring in more money.”

Yes. All we little workers of the world have to deal with crappy deals. We work long hours and don’t get paid what we should. But if we honestly believe our situation is akin to slavery? Come on, already.

Peterson showed just how out of touch he is with the average worker, which happens to buy the tickets to his games. If he was trying to endear himself and his cause to fans, he fell short.

Some folks are saying, “well he didn’t mean it that way” and “it’s just a word” but you know what? It’s a word that has some incredibly painful history to it. It’s not one to be used lightly, and it’s certainly not meant to be thrown in the same sentence with million dollar salaries.

The thing I find most ironic is that Peterson wants the NFL owners to treat players with the respect befitting a business partner, and yet with his latest rant he has showed that he doesn’t deserve it. Similar Posts:

Well, the NFLPA is decertifying, the lockout is upon us, and there hardly is anything more to say about the subject. It becomes a period of watching and waiting to see which group of exceedingly greedy and selfish professional sports groups blinks first. While I previously have written about how fans feel (generally) about this matter in NFL Determined to Throw Fans for a Loss, it only just occurred to me to give at least one fan a forum to let loose about the unmitigated gall and greed of these organizations.

The whole 2011 season ticket invoicing scheme from most, if not all, of the NFL teams is just starting to make it’s run around the sports talk shows and publications. Here is an angry email I received from a Philadelphia Eagles’ season-ticket holder, Mr. Robert Whalon, and I reprint it with his permission. Mr. Whalon brings some serious heat and anger, and it’s a rage that is undoubtedly stoking the angry fire of fans across the nation. It’s a well-written flame-fest directed at the Philadelphia Eagles and apropos to the entire NFL.

Tony,

There is no disputing the greed of the NFL. The millionaire players and billionaire owners are arguing over how to divide $9 billion of their fans’ hard-earned money. But that greed pales in comparison to what I experienced recently.

As the perfect example of greed, I give you exhibit A: the Philadelphia Eagles.

As you probably know, the NFL is in the middle of a little labor dispute. The owners and the players are currently trying to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement so that they can continue to extract as much money as possible from their fans. I know it’s a business, and businesses want to make money, but these guys simply have no conscience. That brings us to the Eagles.

As a season ticket holder for the Eagles for the last twenty years, I have enabled these egomaniacs. I’m like the drug “Charlie Sheen” that Charlie Sheen is on. My mindless devotion to whatever the NFL does allows them to take advantage of the fans. Unfortunately every other football fan across the country is the same as me. The NFL has a monopoly and they know it. As a football fan, I either pay the Eagles whatever they want or I can’t watch a game in-person.

So, the NFL and the individual teams know that they have us by the short-and-curlies. That’s where the Philadelphia Eagles distinguish themselves as the, ahem, “Gold Standard” of Greed.

Since there is no labor agreement between the owners and players, there might not be an actual football season in 2011. But that little fact doesn’t stop NFL franchises like the Philadelphia Eagles from insisting that their season ticket holders pay for their tickets a full six months before the start of a season that isn’t even guaranteed to happen. Gordon Gekko would be proud. “Greed is good.”

But wait, I’m just getting started.

The Eagles are usually nice enough to only demand half of the money by this time of year. I could have mailed a check to the Eagles’ offices in South Philadelphia, but since I am so “green” I decided to pay online. Or maybe I just wanted to rewards points on my credit card. Whatever. That’s where the real greed of the Eagles came to light.

When any Eagles season ticket holder went onto the team’s website to pay their bill there was no option to pay only half of the total amount. Normally you can choose the amount you wish to pay, but not this time. After calling the Eagles and getting a busy signal for hours (I wonder why?) I was told that we should just pay the full amount and then click on the “contact us” button on the screen. That would send the team an email where I could complain about not wanting to pay the full amount for my season tickets six months before a season that might not even happen. I did this and eventually got an email back confirming that I would only be charged half of the full amount.

What’s the big deal you ask? Well let me explain.

The Eagles know full well that the average football fan (actually the average American) is basically illiterate these days and they are taking advantage of that fact. If I didn’t call, I wouldn’t have known to click that “contact us” button and demand that I be allowed to pay only half now, as I have always been able to do in the past. And I’m betting that a large percentage of season ticket holders didn’t bother to call. The average American is also pretty damn lazy, so they just figured they had to pay the entire amount now. You know, six months before a season that might not even happen.

The reason for this “glitch” on the Philadelphia Eagles website is that the Eagles and the rest of the NFL owners’ wallets are suddenly $4 billion lighter after Judge David Doty ruled that the owners couldn’t accept those funds from the networks even if there wasn’t an NFL season this year. Seems that the players union figured out that the NFL wasn’t negotiating in good faith when they agreed to take less for their TV contract in exchange for this little $4 billion safety net. That side deal took money away from revenues that should have been shared with the players under the CBA. More greed from the NFL and the owners.

Well, without that $4 billion, the owners might actually have trouble paying all of their loan obligations associated with stadium construction and the like. So now, owners like Jeffrey Lurie and even Jerry Jones (after building that new bazillion dollar palace of his) suddenly had to search the sofa cushions for loose change. Or maybe just shake down the poor unsuspecting fans.

Yes, season ticket holders have to pay in advance for any tickets that they wish to purchase, but the owners get to earn a whole lot of interest on that money. And if that the amount of money, that the owners like Lurie collect, is suddenly doubled, well then, that’s just a bit more money to keep them afloat in their ongoing struggle to crush the players’ union. The owners correctly assumed that the players would run out of money and get desperate to settle long before the league. Well, without that $4 billion, their plan took a big hit.

This is a disgrace. It’s bad enough that the Eagles charge $10 for a “handling fee,” whatever that means, on all tickets. Or that they charge an additional $1 for any payments made with a credit card. Now they are intentionally deceiving their customers. Someone notify the Better Business Bureau. Or at least tell Jeffrey’s grandmom who gave him every single penny he has. He needs a talking-to.

If anyone thinks that maybe the team’s website just had a glitch, I’m going to have to insist that you never reproduce because you are so stupid I’m surprised you remember to breathe and we sure as hell don’t need any more of your moronic gene pool out in the population.

The bastards who run the Philadelphia Eagles knew exactly what they were doing. They were banking on their fans being either stupid, lazy, or both. And I’m sure they figured that they could count on the many lap-dogs they have in the local media to keep it quiet as well. Well, I’m here to blow the lid off of this scandal.

The Eagles need to be held accountable for these disgraceful tactics and possibly prosecuted for fraud. Certainly there is an ambulance-chasing lawyer with nothing better to do that organize a class-action lawsuit. I think I’ll contact Carl Mayer. He’s the lawyer who sued the New England Patriots and head coach Bill Belichick over “Spygate”. He’s a fellow season ticket holder (albeit for the Jets), so he’ll understand my frustration and anger at getting screwed over yet again by the Eagles.

The Supreme Court just refused to hear the appeal of Mayer v. Belichick, after it was shot down in the lower courts, but I don’t actually want any monetary damages from the Eagles or the NFL. The Eagles would just raise the prices on everything and it would end up costing the fans more in the long run anyway. I just want to shine a light on these disgusting cockroaches and expose them for the greedy bastards that they really are.

Just when you thought the NFL couldn’t sink any lower than to fight over a $9 billion gold mine, something like this happens to make us realize that there is no bottom when it comes to the NFL’s greed.

Well, I take that back. Apparently, the Philadelphia Eagles are setting the bar so low, that I’m not sure it’s possible for any other organization on the planet to go any lower.

Kudos to Jeffrey Lurie. His Eagles really are the “Gold Standard” after all. It’s just too bad for the fans that they’re the Gold Standard of Greed.

Robert Whalon

I don’t know about anyone else, but I had to take a fire-extinguisher to my laptop after I opened that one. That letter simply sizzles. As for the story he tells, it’s not just Whalon who has told this story. I’m sure that the little website “nuance” he could very well be a “simple oversight” – but the timing of it all just seems a little too uncanny. I know it’s hard to tell from Whalon’s rant, but if you read between the lines – I think you’ll see that’s his implication.

Any other fans having similar experiences? Post a comment! Post one before Whalon’s email blows up the entire site! HURRY!Similar Posts:

It is a bad economy and the NFL Lockout is a foregone conclusion. Despite the allegation of “progress” leading to this extension period, it’s very important that these NFL players take a long look at their budgets and find ways to both cut back and supplement their incomes during a prolonged NFL lockout.

With that in mind, I offer the NFL players my Top 10 NFL Lockout Money-Saving Ideas to help them manage through this difficult time.

Champagne tastes on a lockout budget?

Time to lay off of the Cristal for a while. Martini & Rossi Asti Spumante is at least 90% cheaper than the least expensive bottle of Cristal and you’ll still get just as trashed.

Lay-off the Posse.

Dudes, you know these guys are just hangers-on who are livin’ large off your hard work. You’ve seen how it’s done during the summer. It’s time to trim that roster down to say, oh… 53-men, just like NFL cuts. That’s still way more than enough lip-service telling you how great you are, how “you da’man” with a big grin and their hands out. Lose the entourage. You have enough mouths to feed with all of those children you’ve left in your wake.

Petition the Family Court for a Reduction in Child Support Payments.

Chances are, you’ve spread your seed far and wide across the country during your travels from game-to-game. You’re probably paying tens-of-thousands of dollars per month to the gold-diggers you’ve impregnated, be they one, two, three, four or more like some professional athletes are inclined to do. Of course, you probably should have petitioned the court for a downward child support modification 6-months ago with the backlogs in family courts across the country, but without income, even a few months of paying no child support because you aren’t getting paid would be a welcome relief. The NFL lockout by your bosses should be considered an involuntary reduction in income by the courts, but there are no guarantees.

Invest in a Box of Condoms.

A box of premium Trojan Magnum condoms (36 per box) costs about $20 on Amazon. The child support payment you prevent may be your own. $20 equals 36 different conquests without 36 different child support orders costing you most of your weekly paycheck during the season. Impregnating women all of the country isn’t a sign of manhood, it’s a sign of stupidity. Just ask Antonio Cromartie of the New York Jets. The cost savings will be tremendous considering you’ll probably be banging more chicks with all of the down-time you’ll have during the NFL lockout.

NFL Fans Crib Tours.

You can supplement your income by selling “NFL Player’s Crib Tours” during the NFL lockout. Interested fans can pay a premium to wake up at three in the afternoon in your home, go food shopping for the household in your Bentley, and then go club hopping with you into the wee hours of the morning with a gun jammed in his or her pants.

Intimidation Panhandling.

Wake up early, don your gear – we’re talking full pads, helmet, the whole get-up. Pick your favorite street and intimidate passers-by into tossing a few coins in your helmet to help you out during the NFL lockout. If Ray Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens approached me with his forearm extended asking for money, he’d get whatever I had in my pocket thrown over my shoulder while I ran the other way.

Endzone Dance Lessons.

Open up a studio where you can teach children of all ages the latest endzone dance steps that are sure to land them on youtube, if not ESPN… at least not until they’re in the pros. It’s not annoying enough that they take what they see on their video games to the local park pick-up game. Let’em learn from the best.

Don’t Drink and Drive.

All intelligent life forms are well aware of the obvious reasons for not drinking and driving. Though governed by a confidentiality order, I’m sure players like Donte Stallworth or Leonard Little can tell you that paying off the family of a person you happen to kill when driving yourself home from the club probably requires 7-figures. It’s a small price to pay so that you can only serve a few days jail time for killing another human being, but something you can ill-afford to do during the NFL lockout.

Trade-In Your Golden Teef.

With gold prices over $1,400 per ounce and silver prices just over $35 per ounce, it’s easy to see just how much money you can save by selling your gold teef now and trading them in for silver teef. Silver teef look pretty cool, too, and a greater than 97% discount, you can still have a gleaming smile even if you aren’t getting paid during the NFL lockout.

“Make It Rain” With Spare Change

When you’re in the club with your crew, instead of bringing trash bags with tens-of-thousands of dollars in $1-bills – bring in bags of quarters. Aside from the fact that quarters are 75% less costly that dollars, they’re a lot heavier meaning that you’ll bring less of them into the strip-joint. Sure, the strippers are likely to feel like they’re caught in a hail storm, but you’ll probably see a whole lot more jiggling as they try to dodge’em. Win-win!

Here’s an 11th suggestion:

Get the Frigging Deal Done.

You and the owners should be ashamed of yourselves. Seriously. I’m siding with you guys, but for criminy’s sake – get the f**king deal done so we can all move on.Similar Posts:

Think being a great NFL player can get passed down through the generations? With the emergence of Clay Matthews as defensive (and hair) god for the Green Bay Packers, questions now abound on whether the team will pick up his younger brother, Casey, from the draft.

The Matthews boys come from a long line of great players. his dad, Clay Jr., played almost two full decades for the Browns and Falcons. His uncle, Bruce, played for the Oilers, and his grandfather, Clay Sr., played with the 49ers.

All of them did well, so they weren’t a flash in the pan, although I don’t know if they all had the magnificent hair that Clay does. I do know that Casey has the hair, so maybe there will be opportunities for joint hair commercials. Wouldn’t that be special?

Clay was drafted in the Packers first round in 2009, and this year the team could pick up Casey, who has been kicking butt with the University of Oregon. The two brothers are much different players, however. Casey is lighter by 20 pounds and wouldn’t serve in the pass-rusher spot like his brother. Not that the team needs another one. They could let go of a couple veterans in the inside linebacker area, and if they do that Casey might be a pick to make.

Casey says he wouldn’t mind playing in Green Bay, but that he doesn’t “know how people might perceive it. You’re playing in the shadow of your brother. That’s what it would start out as. I would like to prove them wrong.”

Agreed. The kid would be compared continually to Clay throughout the first couple years at least. While that could still happen if he goes to another team, it would be much less so. Besides that, Green Bay is finally getting over comparisons of players in the quarterback position (who shall remain nameless) and they don’t need to start that up again with a new set of players and positions. While Casey would no doubt be a good player to pick up, I think Green Bay should pass on him.Similar Posts:

Football season just ended and if you’re like me you’re probably already missing it. So let me depress you some more, according to CNN, the NFL owners “will continue to generate much of their revenue in 2011, even if next season’s games are cancelled” AND if that wasn’t bad enough, “some teams may be able to survive two years without any games being played.”

Standard & Poor’s took a look at debt and income generation to determine this very bleak figure. Now, the owners would have to pay that money back (mostly to the TV networks and sponsors) but wouldn’t need to do so until games were up and running again. Essentially, they get a loan.

The good news, of course, is that players and owners are still talking about this. But doesn’t the whole mess make you sick to your stomach? As a fan who probably saves up to attend a game, to see the money that people are making (and managing to complain about) it makes me want to boycott football.

Yeah. I said it.

Of course, I’ll never do that. That’s the problem, we love our game. There is a new collective bargaining agreement deadline for Friday, which would mean LOCKOUT, Y’ALL! But hopefully they’ll work something out before then. With a two-year potential for teams to sit things out, the players are the ones who are on the short side here. Many of their careers will only go three or four years as it is.

Need a final dose of nausea? There is a “reserve fund of about $900 million that teams can access in case of a work stoppage.” Well, it’s good to sock money away for a rainy day.Similar Posts:

With the recent efforts by the National Football League to crack down on head-hunting and brutal hits on defenseless players – sad is the news of Dave Duerson’s suicide. Duerson was found dead in his home located in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida. Dave Duerson apparently shot himself in the chest.

In a strange and sobering twist, he chose to send a text message to his family prior to taking his own life. In it, he informed his family that he wanted his brain used for research at the Boston University School of Medicine. I presume that he was all-too-aware of the impact his professional playing career may have had on the depth of his feelings of despair before leaving this world. Left behind are his three sons and daughter born of his marriage to ex-wife, Alicia Duerson.

Dave Duerson excelled as a defensive back for the Chicago Bears and the New York Giants through the 1980s and 1990, making 4 Pro Bowls and winning a pair of Superbowl rings, one with each team. His 11-year career ended quietly with the final few years played with the Phoneix Cardinals (now Arizona Cardinals) in 1993.

His isn’t the only suicide by a former NFL player in recent years. Offensive lineman, Terry Long from the Pittsburgh Steelers did so in 2005. Andre Waters, defensive back for the Philadelphia Eagles did so in 2006. Defensive Lineman, Shane Dronette killed himself in 2009. Now, it’s Dave Duerson in 2011. And there are more.

While every case is unique, the spate of suicides by former NFL players leave many wondering if repetitive head injuries, which have already been shown to adversely affect the players’ brains over the long-haul, are in some way responsible for their untimely deaths at their own hands. It would seem that Duerson’s text message to his family requesting his brain be donated for study in the time leading up to his death has turned the heat way up on the NFL to do more, much more, in terms of studying the effects of their sport on the brains of the players.

In my prior article: James Harrison Fined $75,000 for Making Pro Bowl – I speak to the reality that the NFL simply isn’t doing enough to get to the heart of the medical issues that plague current and former players. While I appreciate that the fines levied against players go to various NFL Charities – I dare to suggest that all of the on-field and off-field fine money should go to the study of these injuries. If the league is going to take money from the players during their career, it’s not unreasonable to expect that the fine money should go towards improving their long-term health after they’ve retired from the game.

Sure, the NFL gifted one million dollars to the same Boston University School of Medicine for the ongoing study of head trauma in sports. Color me completely unimpressed with such a small gift from an organization that makes billions of dollars off of those same players who put their bodies and their lives on the line to make the NFL the premier sporting business in the world.

It’s particularly embarrassing because it is dwarfed by Dave Duerson, the 1987 Walter Payton Man of the Year and widely known as a champion for his fellow NFL brethren, because he donated his life to further research in the area of head trauma in sports.

So, while the owners and the players argue over such trivial issues in the grand scheme of things (like how to divide a billion dollars in revenue), maybe they should consider giving the Boston University School of Medicine that billion dollars so that the post-NFL lives of players and their families may be vastly improved and not littered with crippled and dead bodies. I remain convinced that stealing money from the wallets of players under the guise of “taking head injuries seriously” and then abandoning those same players in the years following their NFL careers isn’t the most appropriate approach. They’re simply not doing enough.Similar Posts:

I still get a little ticked at Tom Brady, who left then girlfriend Bridget Moynahan when he found out she was pregnant. Yeah, sure, he went to the arms of Gisele Bündchen (because you know he just has to date supermodels) and they are happy, but I get a little irritated on Moynahan’s behalf. I mean, seriously, he leaves her when she’s pregnant?

Besides all that, Bündchen said a few ooops about Moynahan and Brady’s kid, namely that he was “100 percent her child” regardless of the fact that Moynahan’s the one that actually gave birth to him. I don’t think the comment itself is that bad (because she probably just meant she really loves the kid) but yakking about her step-child to Vanity Fair? Bad form.

Moynahan has remained mum on the subject of Brady and Bündchen, but does reveal now that it was really difficult when she was giving birth, knowing that Brady wasn’t going to stick around and see her through the whole thing. She said he was there at the birth but “certainly wasn’t holding my hand while I pushed.”

Still, she’s remained classy about this whole relationship mess, saying she’s glad her son is loved by so many people. She says, “My son has two loving parents and an extended family, whether it’s cousins or stepmothers or boyfriends. My son is surrounded by love.”

One thing that amazes me is that Brady hasn’t let any of it affect his game. Either he’s managed to block it out or he’s just that good. Similar Posts:
