U2 is an Irish rock band. Bono is on vocals/rhythm guitar/harmonic, The Edge is on lead guitar/keyboards/backing vocals, Adam Clayton is on bass guitar and Larry Mullen Jr. is on drums/backing vocals.
U2 was founded in 1976 and has sold more than 50.5 million albums in the U.S. and more than 170 million worldwide. They have had six number one albums in the U.S. and nine number one albums in the UK. The band has won 22 Grammy awards-the most for recording artists!
After about 18 months of rehearsals with this new found band the Feedback changed their name to The Hype. The band performed at a talent show in Limerick, Ireland and won the contest. This is around the time when The Hype changed their name to U2. U2 released their first single in Ireland only in September of 1979, "U2-4". In 1980, "Another Day" was released.
In 1980, Island Records signed the band and U2 released their first international single "11 O'Clock Tick Tock" and then released their first album, "Boy". This album gave the band their first hit single, "I Will Follow", which is a fan favorite today. "October" was released in 1981 and in 1983 "War" was released. Their fourth album was released in 1984, "The Unforgettable Fire". "The Unforgettable Fire" tour saw U2 playing in indoor arenas for the first time. In 1985, Rolling Stone magazine called U2 the "band of the 80's". In May of 1986 U2 headlined the Self Aid benefit concert held in Dublin to highlight the chronic unemployment problem in Ireland at the time.
In 1987, "The Joshua Tree", was released and the album debuted at number one in the UK and quickly reached number one in the U.S. The singles "With or Without You" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" also quickly went to number one in the U.S. with "Where the Streets Have No Name" being another popular hit. After an 18 month break from touring U2 went on the Lovetown Tour with B.B. King.
In 1991, "Achtung Baby" was released which was much darker then the band's previous work. "Pop" was released in 1997 and debuted at number one in 28 countries! In September of 1997 the band set a new European record for attendance at a concert for a single performer.
In 2000, "All That You Can't Leave Behind" was released. The band went on the Elevation Tour and the band nearly had to cancel their last third of the tour due to the September 11th attacks, but decided to continue nonetheless. After the tour ended in late 2001 the band performed a three song set in New Orleans during half-time of the Super Bowl. The highlight was "Where the Streets Have No Name" in which the names of the victims from September 11th were projected on to a pair of backdrops scrolling up to the sky.
In late 2002, U2 released their part two of their greatest hits collection, "The Best of 1990-2000". In July of 2004, "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" was stolen, but Bono announced that within a month it would be in stores. The first single from the album, "Vertigo" was released in September. It became an international hit. The album debuted at number one in 32 countries and it sold 840,000 copies in the first week!
In April of 2004 Rolling Stone magazine placed U2 in its 50 greatest rock and roll artists of all time and in March of 2005 the band was inducted in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In February of 2006 U2 took home five Grammy awards.
There is a rumor that U2 is working on their next album, although a release date has not been scheduled, but the rumor is that the album will be out sometime in 2007.
