Barbra Streisand is an Academy Award winning singer, theatre, actress, composer, film producer, and director. She has won Oscars for Best Actress and Best Original Song.

Streisand became a nightclub singer in her teens. In 1960, her boyfriend Barry Dennen helped her get a club act-she performed in a gay bar in Greenwich Village and became a big success as a singer. This is when she decided to shorten her first name from Barbara to Barbra to make it more distinctive.

In 1962, Streisand appeared on Broadway, in the musical "I Can Get It For You Wholesale" and then signed her first recording contract with Columbia Records. Her first album, "The Barbra Streisand Album" won two Grammy Awards in 1963. At one time her first three albums appeared simultaneously on the Billboard's pop albums top 10.

In 1964, Streisand made her debut in "Funny Girl". In 1965, she had her first special, "My Name is Barbra". This special was given lots of positive reviews from both critics and fans.

Barbra Streisand has recorded more than 60 albums. In 1969, she tackled contemporary songwriters and attempted rock, but ended up with pop and ballad-oriented genres. One of her biggest successes was her 1980 album, "Guilty" with Barry Gibb.

The 1970's were very successful for Streisand. She had many number one records and by the end of the 70's she was named the most successful female singer in the U.S. with only Elvis and the Beatles selling more albums.

In 1985 she went back to the theatre with "The Broadway Album". This was a great success as it was in the number one billboard position for three weeks straight and it was certified three-times platinum. The album gave Streisand her eighth Grammy as Best Female Vocalist.

In 1991 a box set "Just for the Record" was released. This contained recordings from her early work up to 1991. In 1993, Streisand made the announcement for a tour-the first in over 27 years. Tickets to the tour were sold-out in one hour. This tour made her the highest paid concert performer in history. She earned two Emmy Awards and the Peabody Award.

By the end of the millennium she was still the number one female singer in the U.S. with at least two number one albums in each decade since she started out. In 2001, "Christmas Memories" was released, in 2003 "The Movie Album" was released, and in 2005 Streisand and Gibb released a sequel album to their previous "Guilty".

In 2006, Streisand made an announcement with her intent to tour again. She wants to raise money and awareness for multiple issues that are dear to her. The tour is scheduled to kick-off in October of 2006 in Philadelphia.

Streisand has received many awards over the years. She has two Oscars, six Emmys, 11 Golden Globes, 10 Grammys, a Tony award, two Cable Ace awards, the American Film Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as many others.

Barbra Streisand has been married twice. Her first husband and father of her son, Jason, is Elliott Gould. They were married from 1963 to 1971. In 1997, she married James Brolin.
