Born Bruce Fredrick Joseph Springsteen in September 23, 1949, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Bruce Springsteen is a rock/folk singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He has won multiple awards including 15 Grammy awards and an Oscar for his song “Philadelphia.” His most famous albums are Born to Run and Born in the U.S.A, and he has sold over 60 million albums in the United States.
Nicknamed “The Boss” by his extensive fan base, Springsteen decided to become a musician after he saw Elvis Presley perform on the Ed Sullivan Show. He bought his first guitar when he was 13 and in 1965, Tex and Marion Vinyard got him started by making him the lead guitarist of The Castiles, a group he later became the leader singer of. The Castiles recorded two songs in New Jersey and were featured at a couple of local venues.
Springsteen continued to perform throughout New Jersey for a few years and eventually met up with Steve Van Zandt, Danny Federici, and Vini Lopez, who joined Springsteen in what would later become E Street Band, Springsteen’s signature backing group. In 1972, Springsteen was signed to a solo record deal with Columbia Records. While recording his first album, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J, Springsteen was sure to include the members that would form his famous back-up band, although they didn’t use the “E Street” moniker until later.
While being critically acclaimed, Springsteen’s first two albums didn’t do much in terms of sales. Undaunted, the Springsteen collective continued recording and in August 25, 1975, they released the masterpiece, Born to Run, an album that became a staple of Bruce Springsteen’s career.
Throughout the 70s and early 80s, Springsteen released three more albums; all receiving critical praise, while extensively touring to support most of these releases. However, it was in 1984 that Springsteen became the household name he is today with the release of Born in the USA, an album that sold 15 million copies in the United States alone, making it one of the more successful studio releases, ever.
It took a considerable amount of time for the hype surrounding Born in the USA to die down and seemingly because of that, Springsteen’s later releases were less of what his fans wanted; an opinion they were not shy in sharing. As he entered the 2000s, Springsteen released a number of collection albums and reconnected with his Jersey roots. He also toured in support of these releases, something he still does to this day.
