Shakira is a Colombian Latin pop star. She is both a singer and songwriter. Shakira grew up in Barranquilla, Colombia. She began writing and composing at the age of eight. One of the first songs she wrote was "Tus Gafas Oscuras". Between the ages of 10 and 13 she became a local celebrity. Shakira met local producer Monica Ariza and Ariza got her seen by Sony Colombia and was signed to write and record three albums.

Shakira's first album was "Magia" with Sony Colombia in 1991, she was 13. Less than one thousand copies were sold, however the album is now sought after as a collectors item. "Peligro" was her second album and was released in 1993 by Sony Colombia, Shakira was 15. After the release of her second album Shakira went back to school to finish up high school. In 1995, Shakira released her third album, "Pies Descalzos", which was a definite success. It sold more than 5 million copies worldwide. She then released "The Remixes", and then her fourth album "Donde Estan Los Ladrones". This album sold more than 7 million copies worldwide. She also released "Shakira MTV Unplugged" which was a live album form the singles of her fourth album.

In 2000 she began her tour and won the now "International Viewer's Choice Award" at the MTV Video Music Awards with "Ojos Asi". In 2001, she released her first English album, "Laundry Service" and it sold more than 13 million copies worldwide. In 2002, she released the Spanish "Greatest Hits" volume "Grandes Exitos". In 2002, she won five MTV Video Music Awards Latin America for Best Female Artist, Best Pop Artist, Best Artist-North, Video of the Year, and Artist of the Year. In 2004, she released a DVD album "Live & Off the Record".

"Fijacion Oral Vol. 1" was released in June of 2005. Her hit "La Tortura" reached number one in Spain and number 23 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. So far this album has sold close to 5 million copies. In November of 2005, "Oral Fixation Vol. 2" was released. "Don't Bother" is the album's lead single and "Hips Don't Lie" became her first number one single at the U.S. Billboard Top 100. She re-released "Oral Fixation Vol. 2" in March of 2006.

Shakira won a Grammy award in February 2006 for "Fijacion Oral Vol. 1" in the category of Best Latin Rock Album". In April of 2006, Shakira received six Latin Billboard Awards. In June 2006, it was noted that "Hips Don't Lie" was the most played song in pop radio history according to Nielson Broadcast Data Systems.

Shakira has been dating Antonio de la Rua since 2000, the son of the former president of Argentina Fernando de la Rua. In March of 2001, De la Rua proposed to Shakira-they remain engaged, with no announced marriage plans.
