John Mayer is a pop music singer and songwriter. In 2005, he made the transition in to the blues genre. Mayer's inspiration for pop music and the guitar did not come around until the age of 13. Mayer's father brought home a Stevie Ray Vaughan tape and this is when he discovered the blues and began playing the guitar. After a couple of years of practice Mayer began playing in blues bars. He was in a band called Villanova Junction while in high school with Joe Beleznay, Tim Procaccini, and Rich Wolf.
John Mayer enrolled at the Berklee College of Music when he was 19. He ended up deciding he was more interested in writing and playing music instead of studying it. He stopped his studies and moved to Atlanta where he began his career and quickly made a name for himself in the local coffeehouse and club circuit.
In 2003, Mayer won a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for his 2002 release of "Your Body is a Wonderland" from his "Room for Squares" album. In June of 2004, Mayer began writing a column for Esquire magazine which was called "Music Lessons with John Mayer". In 2005, he won a Grammy Award for Song of the Year for "Daughters" from his album "Heavier Things". He also won Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
Mayer allows audio taping at most of his live performances and even allows the noncommercial trading of the recordings. In 2004, Mayer worked with Kanye West and appeared on his "Bittersweet" set for release in 2006. In 2005, he began collaborating with blues artists like Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, and jazz artist John Scofield. Mayer is not only a successful singer and songwriter, but a talented guitarist as well. In the spring of 2005, he formed the John Mayer Trio with bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan. The trio plays blues and rock music. A live album "Try!" was released in October of 2005. The trio is no longer, it was announced at the end of their performance at the Tempe Music Festival in March of 2006.
