Madonna is known as the "Queen of Pop". She is a pop singer, dancer, songwriter, producer, actress, and author. She is known for her provocative videos, stage performances and use of sexual and religious themes.

She became one of the most well known recording artists of the 1980's and 1990's. Her music began as dance music and slowly evolved to allow her to receive much acclaim including, five Grammy Awards. Madonna was credited as the most successful female recording artist of all time by the Guiness Book of World Records.

Madonna began her career taking music lessons; however she asked and convinced her father to allow her to take ballet instead. She received a dance scholarship to attend the University of Michigan. She left college for New York City to pursue a dance career. While performing as a dancer she met musician Dan Gilroy whom she later formed her first rock band with, the Breakfast Club, in New York. She sang, played the drums and guitar in this band. In 1980, Madonna formed the band, Emmy, with drummer and former boyfriend Stephen Bray.

In 1982, Madonna signed with Sire Records. Her first release was "Everybody", which became a dance hit in the U.S. In late 1982, she released "Burning Up" and "Physical Attraction" which both were dance hit successes. Her debut album, "Madonna", was a collection of dance songs released in 1983. Her follow-up album, "Like a Virgin", was released in 1984 and was an international success. She became a regular fixture on MTV and made her first appearance at the first MTV Video Music Awards. In 1985, she was a mainstream artist, and did a few films as well as started her first concert tour. "True Blue" was released in 1986.

In 1987, she went on "Whose That Girl World Tour". Later in the year she did a remix album, "You Can Dance". Madonna not only released "Like a Prayer" in 1989, but also signed an endorsement deal with Pepsi. In 1990, she released "Breathless" and her first "Greatest Hits" album, "The Immaculate Collection". The years of 1992 through 1997 proved to be very controversial due to sex and Evita.

"Ray of Light" was released in 1998. The release has been certified as four times platinum. In 2001, she toured for the first time in eight years with the "Drowned World Tour". Between 2001 and 2006 she has worked with many other artists and released several records as a solo artist as well as in a collaboration effort.

Currently Madonna is on the "Confessions Tour" which lasts through September of 2006. This tour is expected to be one of the highest grossing world tours of all time for a female artist as it is expected to earn more than $200 million from tickets and sales.

A "Madonna tracksuit" is being prepared for the H&M fashion line. Madonna and her dancers are going to be the new face of the fashion line. H&M have clothing chains all over the world-they will have a new Madonna track to sell exclusively at their stores.
