Kid Rock (Robert James Ritchie) is a rapper, singer, and rock musician artist. Kid Rock lived in the suburbs of Romeo, Michigan. After a lawn mower accident that resulted in his brother, Billy, losing his leg, Rock's father pushed the burden of holding down the household chores to him. This led to friction between him and his father which is evident in his song, "My Oedipus Complex".
Kid Rock eventually ran away to the housing projects in Mount Clemens, Michigan and took his Sears turntables to basement parties in the hope of getting the chance to play. Bo Wisdom of Groove Time Production gave him this very opportunity and the all black crowd was going to watch the white kid rock!
Kid Rock worked with Groove Time Production and the Beastcrew. He eventually went to Jive Records and he signed at 17. He then began the "Straight from the Underground" tour with Ice Cube, Too $hort, D-Nice, Yo-Yo, and Milk Paddles.
"Grits Sandwiches for Breakfast" was released in 1990 and the first single was banned by the FCC. Jive let Kid Rock go so he later signed with Continuum and recorded, "The Polyfuze Method" in 1993. The album wasn't as successful as hoped and Continuum dropped him from the label.
Kid Rock started up his own label, Top Dog, and from July 1994 to March 1995 he produced demo tapes called "The Bootleg Series". In 1995, he took on a janitor position at Whiterooms Studios in order to pay the studio fees. He released "Early Mornin' Stoned Pimp" which he sold 100,000 copies from his basement. At this time Kid Rock set up a record showcase, but only one label showed up, Atlantic Records. They sent him back in to the studio to produce two more demos. Kid Rock got the record deal and in 1997 added Jason Krause and Stefanie Eulinberg to his band that joined Kenny Olson, Jimmie Bones, Uncle Kracker, Mike Bradford, and Joe. C.
In August of 1998, Kid Rock released "Devil Without a Cause". This is when the Vans Warped Tour began. Singles, "Welcome 2 the Party" and "Devil" were not successful until Carson Daly got things rolling for Kid. Kid Rock released a video "I Am the Bullgod" to MTV and with Carson Daly's support it became a hit. Things were going well for Kid Rock and he was performing at Woodstock 1999 and the Grammy Awards. "Cowboy", "Only God Knows Why" and "Wasting Time" were released and became successful hits making the album seven times platinum, and it would eventually reach 11.
"The History of Rock" album was released in 2000 and the only new track was "American Bad Ass". Later in 2000 Kid Rock joined Phish onstage for several songs at a concert in Las Vegas. At the end of 2000, Joe C died of Celiac disease.
In 2001, "Cocky" was released and featured all new songs which had a bit of country music fused in to them. Kid Rock has collaborated with artists like Sheryl Crow and Hank Williams Junior. In 2003, he released a self-titled album which contained the song "Feel Like Makin' Love" a cover of the Bad Company's song. He has also appeared in two of Gretchen Wilson's music videos for "Redneck Woman" and All Jacked Up".
"Live Trucker", Kid Rock's first live album was released in February of 2006. Kid Rock not only sings, but plays the guitar, bass, percussion, mixing, mellotron, keyboard, slide guitar, scratching, programming, producing, and even the banjo.
Kid Rock and Twisted Brown Trucker will release a live DVD of their home stand at the Palace of Auburn Hills which will be released sometime by the end of 2006.
