Whether it’s the original manifestation featuring Peter Gabriel or the current version fronted by Phil Collins, the band Genesis has been one of the most successful groups to come out of England. The initial collection got their start in the 1960s in Surrey, England. The original line-up featured Gabriel, Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks; Anthony Philips, and Chris Stewart.
Of that group, both Rutherford and Banks are still apart of the Genesis collection, while still enjoying success as solo artists.
In 1969, Genesis released their first album, From Genesis to Revelation, in 1969 with the help of Jonathan King, a writer and producer who was a member of the same school as Gabriel and Banks, the founding-members of Genesis. It was King who came up the band name, indicating it represented the new style Genesis was introducing.
After this, the band continued to toil with moderate recognition, but there was some turnover in the band. The original drummer was replaced twice before they settled on Phil Collins, who later became the synonymous member of Genesis. Collins, along with Steve Hackett on guitar, made their Genesis debut in 1971 on the album Nursery Cryme. During the early 70s, the band continued to release albums and tour extensively. Because of Gabriel’s theatricality, Genesis became an incredibly popular live show during this time.
However, in 1975, Gabriel announced he was leaving Genesis because he wanted to pursue a solo effort. He also explained, in a open letter written to the Genesis fans, that the band had become prisoners of their success. Despite this, the remaining members decided to continue on with the existing band with Collins becoming the lead singer.
In 1979, Guitarist Steve Hackett left the band, leaving it with the current trio consisting of Collins on drums and vocals, Mike Rutherford on guitar and backing and Tony Banks on keyboard. This is the version of Genesis that fans now enjoy.
Throughout the late 70s and early 80s, the newly arranged Genesis continued to put out albums and tour, all of which experienced notable success. However, in 1986, the band released Invisible Touch, their most commercially successful album, by far, selling over 6 million copies worldwide. While Genesis was certainly known before Invisible Touch, it was this album that made them a household name.
The supporting tour for Invisible Touch began in 1986 and lasted through 1987.
After the worldwide success of that particular release, the band took a 5-year hiatus and then released I Can’t Dance, another successful album and tour that furthered solidified Genesis in the pop culture annals.
In 1996, Collins announced he was leaving the band, saying his 25 year-stint was long enough and it was time for him to pursue different avenues musically. However, this decision was not permanent because in November 2007, the original trio of Collins, Rutherford and Banks announced a reunion tour, almost 40 years after the original Genesis band formed.
