The Red Hot Chili Peppers have written and released several songs on political topics. "Green Heaven" is about police brutality and racism. "Johnny Kicks a Hole in the Sky" focuses on the plight and affliction of Native Americans.

The band was formed by four high school friends in 1983. Their debut album "Red Hot Chili Peppers" was produced by Andy Gill. George Clinton was hired to produce their second album in 1985, "Freaky Styley". They didn't reach the Billboard Top 200 until 1987 with "The Uplift Mofo Party Plan"-this would be the only album that would feature the four friends, Balzary, Irons, Kiedis, and Slovak.

During their tour drug problems came to light and began to predominantly haunt the band. The band returned to tour in 1988, but found Slovak dead of a heroin overdose. The band brought in DH Peligro, DeWayne McKnight, and later replacing them with Chad Smith and John Frusciante. In 1989, "Mother's Milk" was released which gave the band their first top modern rock hit which was a tribute to Slovak, "Knock Me Down".

All of the fame and drugs started to take its toll on Frusciante. He all of a sudden quit the band in 1992. Frusciante rejoined the band in 1998 after being in rehab and releasing two solo albums. Once Frusciante rejoined the band they released "Californication" and it became an amazing success. They went back to the studio in 2001 and released "By the Way" in 2002 and this became their biggest chart debut ever! In 2004 the band released a live album, "Live in Hyde Park" which was recorded during their 2004 performances in London.

Their latest album was released in 2006 and became their first album to debut at number one and their biggest selling album!
