Mariah Carey is a pop and R&B singer/songwriter, record producer, and actress. Mariah made her debut in 1990 with Columbia Records and became the first recording artist to have her first five singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Carey became one of the most successful artists of the 1990's.

Mariah Carey co-wrote all of her debut album and continued to co-write nearly all of her material for the rest of her career. Carey won Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for her debut single, "Vision of Love". "Emotions" was Carey's second album released in 1991. Carey was plagued with stage fright so that prevented her from doing any major public tours. Carey's first concert appearance was on MTV Unplugged in 1992.

Mariah Carey married Columbia Records executive, Tommy Mottola, in 1993. Babyface consulted on her next album which was released late in 1993. "Merry Christmas" was released in 1994, with "All I Want for Christmas Is You". In 1995, "Daydream" was released which became her biggest selling LP in the U.S. In 1996, Carey and Mottola separated. Their separation wasn't formally announced until 1997 and the divorce was final the following year. Upon this time Carey took over control of her image and music and introduced hip-hop into her albums. Carey also began focus as a songwriter and producer for other artists including, Allure, 7 Mile, and Blaque.

"Butterfly" was released in 1997, which produced the number one single "Honey". In 1998, she compiled her number one hits into an album and had it released. Also, included in this album was a duet with Whitney Houston. "Rainbow" was released in 1999 with two number one singles which made Carey the only artist to have a number one single each year in the 1990's. This album became her lowest selling LP and when "Crybaby" and "Can't Take That Away (theme)" did not stay within the top 20 Carey accused Sony of not promoting it enough.

Carey left Columbia and signed a contract with EMI's Virgin Records worth a reported $80 million. In July of 2001, it was reported that Carey had an emotional breakdown. Her career was declining. By the end of July, she had checked in to a hospital and it was announced that she would be taking a break from public appearances. In 2002, Virgin bought out Carey's contract. Later in the year she signed with Island/Def Jam and then launched her record label MonarC. Carey released "Charmbracelet" which was said to be her "new lease on life".

It wasn't until 2005 that Mariah Carey's career started to pick up and become successful again. She released "The Emancipation of Mimi" which became the best-selling album in the U.S. and won three Grammy Awards. The single "We Belong Together" held the hot 100s number one for 14 weeks and was the biggest hit of 2005. She has 17 number ones, and is only second to the Beatles who have 21 number ones. Her "Adventures of Mimi" concert tour is scheduled for the summer of 2006.
