Andrea Bocelli is a renowned singer, writer and producer. He is considered a classical crossover and an operatic tenor. He has recorded four operas in addition to his classical and pop records.
Bocelli was born with congenital glaucoma and was blind by the age of 12 by a cerebral hemorrhage which he received when he was hit in the head while playing football. He began playing the organ at church and by 12 won the Margherita d'Oro in Viareggio with "O Sole Mio". This was his first win in music competition. He worked for a year as a lawyer, but then decided to take singing lessons and take up music full-time.
Zucchero Fornaciari was searching for tenors for a duet in "Miserere" in 1992 and came across Bocelli. Bocelli auditioned which led to Luciano Pavarotti urging Zucchero to us Bocelli's voice instead of himself. The song was recorded, but Bocelli accompanied Zucchero in the tour.
In 1994, Bocelli won a competition at the Sanremo Festival for "Il mare calmo della sera" which led to a gold record. Also in 1994 he was Macduff in Macbeth, sang at Pavarotti's benefit concert, and performed for the Pope. The next year Bocelli's song "Con Te Partiro" came in fourth at the Sanremo Festival.
Bocelli teamed up with Sarah Brightman for a duet version of "Con Te Partiro". He entered the American market in 1998 and did a concert at John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as well as a White House reception. He also did a duet with Celine Dion and had a live opera via the Internet with Denyce Graves.
In 2002, he continued touring and by 2006 was singing at the NBA All-Star Weekend, and at the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics. He also had the pleasure of working with six of the American Idol finalists. He was so impressed by Katharine McPhee's talent that he asked her to accompany and perform with him in three of his California dates.
