Christina Aguilera aspired to be a singer since she was a small child. Her grandmother was the first person to recognize her vocal skills. As a child she performed at block parties and in talent competitions. In March of 1990 she appeared on Star Search, but failed to win. She went back home after her Star Search appearance and appeared on Pittsburgh's KDKA-TV's Wake Up with Larry Richert to perform-people remarked that the 10-year-old "sounded 20." Aguilera sang "The Star Spangled Banner" before Pittsburgh Penguins hockey games, Pittsburgh Steelers football games, and Pittsburgh Pirates baseball games throughout her childhood in Pittsburgh. In 1993, she joined the Disney Channel's variety show The New Mickey Mouse Club. The show ended in 1994 and that is when Christina Aguilera started recording demos in hopes of getting signed to a record label.
In 1998, she sang the High "E" in full voice on a cover of Whitney Houston's "Run to You" which she recorded on an old tape recorder in her bathroom. She was then selected to record the song "Reflection" for the Disney animated production of Mulan. The song went on to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award for "Best Original Song" in 1998. Under Steve Kurtz Aguilera released her self titled album, Christina Aguilera, in August of 1999. Her singles "Genie in a Bottle," "What a Girl Wants," and "Come on Over Baby (All I Want is You)" topped the Billboard 100 charts during 1999 and 2000, and "I Turn to You" reached number three. Aguilera won "Best New Artist" at the 2000 Grammy Awards and was nominated for "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance" for "Genie in a Bottle." She ended the year on MTV's 2 Large New Year's Special performing as MTV's first artist of the millennium.
Aguilera went on to release her first Spanish album, Mi Reflejo in September of 2000. The album was certified Gold in the U.S. and 3x Platinum under the RIAA's Los Premios de Oro y Platino program. She released a Christmas album in October of 2000 called My Kind of Christmas which has been certified Platinum in the U.S. She went on to sing a duet with Ricky Martin for his album, Sound Loaded which released in 2001. In 2001, Aguilera joined Lil' Kim, Mya, P!nk to remake Patti LaBelle's "Lady Marmalade." Finally, in October of 2002, Aguilera's second English album, Stripped, was released. This album produced hits like "Dirrty," "Beautiful," "Fighter," and "Can't Hold Us Down." Aguilera joined Justin Timberlake in the final portion of his international "Justified" tour held in the U.S. During the fourth quarter of the year Aguilera continued to tour by herself changing the name of the tour to "Stripped." In late 2004, she released two singles "Car Wash" and "Tilt Ya Head Back." In August of 2006, her third English album, Back to Basics, was released and produced a lead single "Ain't No Other Man" as well as "Hurt."
