Buffalo Area Attractions

Albright-Knox Art Gallery
1285 Elmwood Avenue • Buffalo, NY 14222 • 716.882.8700
Routinely ranked as one of the country's top museums for modern art, with works by Picasso, Matisse, van Gogh, Monet and other masters. The gorgeous Albright-Knox is one of Buffalo's can't-miss attractions, a treasure trove of 5,000 works that should attract more attention than it does. This Greek Revival building with 18 dramatic marble columns on its facade nabs some exhibits that don't even make it to New York City. The original wing dates from 1905, but the Albright has focused on collecting more modern works for its newer wing, which opened in 1962. Gaugin, Picasso, Pollock, de Kooning, and Warhol are all represented in the permanent collection, while some artists of the moment and cutting-edge photographers have works here as well.

Anchor Bar
1047 Main Street • Buffalo, NY 14209 • 716.886.8920
Home of the original Buffalo Wings, deep-fried chicken wings flavored with a secret sauce, this internationally known restaurant is frequented by thousands of customers, including many celebrities.

Buffalo Zoological Gardens
300 Parkside Ave. • Buffalo, NY 14214 • 716.837.3900
Established in 1875, this is one of the oldest zoos in the U.S. In the late 1930s, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) gave the zoo a major facelift, and today its buildings and animal enclosures have an old-fashioned appeal. More than 1,000 animals are housed in a compact setting on the grounds of Delaware Park.

Kazoo Museum
300 Parkside Ave. • Buffalo, NY 14214 • 716.837.3900
The enormous kazoo on the roof of this house may make you feel like you're in Oz, but this museum is one of those upstate quirks that makes this area an interesting exploration. Unless you're a kazoo fanatic -- or lover of the offbeat -- you probably shouldn't drive out of your way for this museum, but lovers of quirk will be in heaven. You'll find kazoos of all shapes and sizes: wooden kazoos, liquor bottle-shaped kazoos that celebrated the end of prohibition, silver and gold kazoos, and many more.

Niagara Clipper Sightseeing Cruise
79 Marine Drive • Buffalo, NY 14202 • 716.856.6696 • 800.244.8684
Unfortunately, Buffalo doesn't have much in the way of a developed waterfront, but you can find out what Lake Erie is all about on a trip aboard the Miss Buffalo or Niagara Clipper sightseeing cruises. Narrated tours and dining cruises, which offer views of Buffalo's unique architecture, depart from the Erie Basin Marina downtown from May through October (cruise Tues-Sun).
